You can give an inhabitant of a developing country a fish to alleviate his hunger, or you can give him a fishing net and teach him how to fish. Yet you can still go a step further: you can lend him money to buy a fishing net and teach him how to save. In that way, he is helped along in his development towards independence. |
Three billion people in this world still do not have access to financial services such as saving, credit or insurance. Microfinance and microinsurance organisations in developing countries offer a solution to this by developing services for “non-credit worthy” and “uninsurable” persons. They are not small-scale financial institutions; they are organisations with an adapted business model. These credit facilities require the good support and education of the local population. The development of health insurance is also unthinkable without investment in health services. The difficulty in accessing financial services in developingis also unthinkable without investment in health services.
BRS is convinced that savings and credit loans should not be seen as an objective in and of themselves, but rather as a resource not only to increase welfare but also to place more attention on human welfare.
